Google unveiled major updates to its Gemini AI app at its I/O 2026 developer conference, signaling a stronger push to compete directly with AI rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
The updates position Gemini as more than just a chatbot, with Google aiming to turn the app into an all-in-one AI assistant deeply integrated across its ecosystem.
Among the biggest announcements was the launch of Gemini 3.5 Flash, a faster AI model designed for coding, creative work, and interactive tasks. Google also confirmed that a more advanced Gemini 3.5 Pro model is expected soon.
The company introduced “Gemini Spark,” an always-on AI assistant capable of scanning emails, summarising notes, and interacting with apps like Gmail and Google Workspace in real time.
Google also redesigned the Gemini app with a more interactive interface, improved voice features, and expanded multimedia capabilities, including tools for generating videos, images, and audio through its new Gemini Omni system.
The upgrades reflect intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence industry, where companies are racing to build AI systems that can handle productivity, creativity, search, and personal assistance within one platform.
Industry analysts say Google’s strategy is increasingly focused on making Gemini a central layer across Search, Android, YouTube, and Workspace products rather than keeping it as a standalone AI tool.
