MTN MoMo South Sudan has intensified efforts to equip local entrepreneurs and agents with practical digital finance skills, supporting business growth and wider adoption of mobile money services in a predominantly cash-based economy. Training initiatives cover financial literacy, business management, digital payments adoption, customer service and operational efficiency, aiming to help participants run more sustainable enterprises and expand formal financial access.

Earlier programmes, including the “Growing Your Business” series delivered in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), have focused on micro-entrepreneurs in Juba and other areas. Participants received instruction in financial management, marketing, customer relations and the use of MoMo tools to track income, make digital payments and reduce reliance on cash. MTN Fintech leadership has described these efforts as part of a broader strategy to democratise access to financial services and unlock economic potential for small businesses.

In 2026, MTN MoMo convened nationwide agent forums to rebuild confidence, align service standards and address operational challenges, particularly around cash availability for withdrawals. Agents serve as the primary interface for many customers in South Sudan, where traditional banking penetration remains low. The engagements emphasised professionalism, consistent service delivery and the role of agents as ambassadors for digital financial services.

MTN MoMo has also supported digital literacy components within wider inclusion programmes, including training for refugees, internally displaced persons and host communities on mobile money use, online safety and access to essential services. These activities complement network expansion and product innovations such as inbound remittances partnerships and campaigns designed to increase MoMo adoption and trust.

South Sudan’s mobile money ecosystem has grown since MTN MoMo’s formal launch, with regulatory recognition of mobile money as a payment instrument and ongoing efforts to expand agent coverage and transaction volumes. High levels of financial exclusion and limited formal banking infrastructure make digital skills training a critical enabler for both individual livelihoods and broader economic formalisation.

MTN positions skills development as complementary to its commercial mobile money operations. By equipping entrepreneurs and agents with the knowledge to use digital tools effectively, the company aims to drive higher transaction activity, improve service reliability and contribute to South Sudan’s financial inclusion goals. Continued training and support will be essential as the market matures and more users transition from cash to digital payments.
