Apple has launched its Tap to Pay feature on iPhone in South Africa, allowing businesses and merchants to accept contactless payments directly on their iPhones without needing extra payment hardware.

The new service enables merchants to receive payments using contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets by simply using an iPhone and a supported payment app. Customers can complete transactions by tapping their card or smartphone on the merchant’s device.

Apple said the feature is designed to make digital payments easier for small businesses, retailers, and entrepreneurs looking for affordable ways to accept cashless payments. The company added that the service uses the iPhone’s built-in security and privacy features to protect payment information during transactions.

The rollout in South Africa marks another step in Apple’s expansion of Tap to Pay into global markets as contactless payments continue to grow across Africa and other regions. The service is expected to benefit small and medium-sized businesses that may not have access to traditional point-of-sale terminals.

Several payment platforms and financial technology partners are supporting the launch, allowing merchants to activate the feature through compatible iOS apps. Businesses using the service will need an eligible iPhone model and updated software to access the feature.

South Africa has seen steady growth in digital banking and mobile payment adoption in recent years, driven by increasing smartphone usage and demand for faster payment options. Contactless payment systems have also become more common in retail stores, restaurants, and service businesses across the country.

Industry observers say the launch could help more small businesses move toward cashless transactions while reducing the need for expensive payment equipment.

Apple said the feature is now available for merchants in South Africa through participating payment providers.
