Telekom Networks Malawi has invested US$31 million to expand and upgrade its network, aiming to deliver stronger coverage, higher capacity and improved service quality nationwide. The operator, listed on the Malawi Stock Exchange, says the outlay is focused on meeting rising demand for voice and data services.
The investment covers network modernisation, 4G and 5G expansion, and distribution infrastructure. CEO Michel Hebert has previously noted that annual equipment spending typically ranges between $15 million and $20 million, with the current cycle elevated to $31 million. Foreign-exchange constraints remain a challenge, sometimes forcing the company to source dollars at a premium.
TNM, Malawi’s pioneer mobile operator, currently covers the large majority of the population and is targeting further reach into underserved rural areas. The company has also deployed hundreds of solar-powered sites to lower operating costs and improve reliability in areas with limited grid access. Customers are expected to see better call quality and faster data speeds once the latest equipment is fully installed.
Malawi’s telecom sector continues to face structural hurdles, including foreign-currency shortages, inflation and high energy costs. Despite these pressures, TNM has continued to prioritise network investment while growing its mobile-money platform, Mpamba, and rolling out newer technologies such as 5G in key urban centres.
The latest capital commitment reflects a familiar pattern among African operators: steady, multi-year infrastructure spending is required simply to keep pace with data traffic growth and to close remaining coverage gaps. For TNM, the $31 million allocation is intended both to improve the experience of existing customers and to support broader digital inclusion as more Malawians come online.
Results will ultimately be measured in coverage gains, congestion reduction and service reliability rather than the headline spend alone. In a market where reliable connectivity remains uneven, incremental network investment remains one of the most direct levers available to operators.
