The Hormuud Salaam Foundation has inaugurated a fully equipped ICT laboratory at the Gaheyr campus of Somali National University in Mogadishu. The facility was officially opened by Somalia’s Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, university president Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Mohamed, and foundation chairman Abdullahi Nur Osman.

The laboratory, donated and outfitted by the foundation, includes 34 computers, interactive touchscreen boards, speakers and other tools designed for ICT-based teaching and training. Officials said the space is intended to strengthen classroom instruction, improve student-lecturer engagement and expand access to digital learning resources for Somali youth.

Abdullahi Nur Osman described the project as part of the foundation’s ongoing commitment to education and digital skills development. The Minister of Education and the university president both praised the contribution, highlighting its potential role in modernising higher education in Somalia.

Hormuud Salaam Foundation is the philanthropic arm funded by Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank. It has previously supported technology skills initiatives, including partnerships focused on training computer science graduates. The new lab at the national university adds physical infrastructure to those efforts at a time when Somalia continues to rebuild and expand its higher-education capacity after years of conflict.

Somali National University, the country’s flagship public institution, has been gradually restoring facilities and programmes since its formal reopening. Access to functional computer labs remains limited across many campuses, making targeted private-sector donations a practical way to close immediate gaps in teaching infrastructure.

The impact of the Gaheyr campus lab will depend on sustained maintenance, curriculum integration and reliable power and connectivity. For now it represents a concrete, locally driven addition to the digital learning resources available to students at the national university.
