Aishatu Dahiru Binani, widely known as Aisha Binani, is a Nigerian politician, engineer, and business executive whose career spans public service, entrepreneurship, and strategic investment in multiple sectors including aviation, telecommunications, oil and gas, and infrastructure development. She is one of the most prominent female political figures in northern Nigeria and a leading voice in discussions around economic inclusion and women’s participation in leadership.

Early Life and Background

Born on 11 August 1971 in Adamawa State, northeastern Nigeria, Aishatu Dahiru Binani grew up in a culturally rooted environment shaped by education, commerce, and public service values. Her upbringing in Jimeta, Yola, played a significant role in shaping her interest in governance, engineering, and enterprise development.

She is married to Professor Ahmed Modibbo, and her family background reflects a strong academic and professional influence that later supported her diverse career path.

Education

Binani’s academic journey reflects a strong technical and managerial foundation. She completed her primary education in Kaduna before finishing in Jimeta, Yola, and proceeded to Government Secondary School, Yola for her secondary education.

She further pursued higher education at the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, where she obtained both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

To broaden her professional expertise, she attended the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, where she obtained certification in Rural Radio Systems. She also holds additional qualifications including a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management and a certificate in Data Processing from Nasarawa State University.

This combination of engineering, business, and technology education laid the foundation for her multidisciplinary career.

Business Career and Binani Group

Before and alongside her political career, Binani established herself as a successful entrepreneur through the creation of Binani Nigeria Limited, which later evolved into the broader Binani Group of Companies.

The group operates across multiple sectors, including printing and publishing, telecommunications, construction, finance-related services, and oil and gas. Her business interests reflect a long-term strategy focused on diversification, indigenous investment, and economic empowerment within Nigeria.

Through her corporate expansion, Binani positioned herself among a small group of Nigerian female entrepreneurs leading multi-sector business conglomerates.

Political Career

Aishatu Dahiru Binani entered active politics and quickly rose to national prominence within the All Progressives Congress (APC). Her political career includes representation at both the House of Representatives and the Nigerian Senate.

From 2011 to 2015, she served as a Member of the House of Representatives representing Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency. During this period, she was involved in legislative discussions focused on development, infrastructure, and social welfare.

She later became a Senator representing Adamawa Central in the 9th National Assembly (2019–2023), where she chaired the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her role placed her at the center of national discussions on development policy, poverty reduction, and international development alignment.

Binani also became one of the most prominent female political figures in northern Nigeria, gaining national attention during her governorship ambition in Adamawa State, where she emerged as one of the most competitive female candidates in Nigeria’s recent political history.

Recognition and Traditional Title

In recognition of her contributions to development and public service, she was conferred with the traditional title of Gimbiyar Adamawa in 2020 by the Adamawa Emirate Council. This title reflects her influence within her home state and her contributions to community development and leadership.

Aviation and Binani Air

A major milestone in her business expansion is the establishment of Binani Air, a domestic Nigerian airline that marks her entry into the aviation sector.

Binani Air was launched as part of her broader vision to expand indigenous participation in transportation and infrastructure development. The airline commenced scheduled commercial flight operations on key routes including Abuja and Lagos, with planned expansion to cities such as Yola, Kano, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Gombe, and Bauchi.

The airline operates from its headquarters at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and uses Embraer E170 regional jets for domestic commercial operations, alongside Hawker 800XP aircraft for charter services.

Binani Air received regulatory certification from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority after completing required safety and operational assessments.

The airline is widely described as one of Nigeria’s first fully female-owned airlines operating scheduled domestic flights, positioning Binani as a pioneering figure in a sector traditionally dominated by male leadership.

Leadership and Influence

Throughout her career, Aishatu Dahiru Binani has been recognised for her resilience, ambition, and ability to operate across both political and business environments. Her leadership style reflects a strong focus on expansion, inclusion, and indigenous capacity building.

She is widely regarded as part of a new generation of Nigerian leaders bridging the gap between governance and private-sector development, particularly in infrastructure and transport.

Legacy and Impact

Aishatu Dahiru Binani represents a unique blend of engineering expertise, entrepreneurial success, and political leadership. Her career spans legislative service, multi-sector business expansion, and aviation investment.

Through Binani Air and the Binani Group of Companies, she has contributed to expanding indigenous participation in strategic sectors of Nigeria’s economy.
