YouTube has announced that users now watch over 2 billion hours of YouTube Shorts on television screens every single month.

This significant milestone shows the fast-growing shift from mobile-only viewing to big-screen consumption of short-form videos. According to YouTube, Smart TVs and connected TV devices have become major platforms for watching Shorts, especially in markets like Nigeria, India, and the United States.

The 2 billion hours figure highlights how Shorts have moved beyond phones to living rooms across the world. Many Nigerians now connect their phones to TVs or use Smart TVs to enjoy vertical short videos on larger screens, particularly in the evening with family and friends.

YouTube said the strong growth on TVs is driven by easier casting features, improved recommendations, and the increasing number of households with Smart TVs in Africa and other emerging markets. Shorts, which compete directly with TikTok, now form a huge part of daily watch time on the platform.

This development is important for content creators in Nigeria and across Africa. Many are now optimising their Shorts for TV viewing, using clearer visuals and audio that work well on bigger screens. It also opens new opportunities for monetisation as YouTube continues to expand ad support for Shorts on connected TVs.

YouTube noted that Shorts remain one of the fastest-growing formats on the platform, with billions of views daily. The surge in TV consumption suggests that short-form video is no longer limited to young people on mobile phones but is becoming mainstream family entertainment.

The company said it will continue to improve the Shorts experience on TVs to make discovery and viewing even smoother for users.

This latest milestone further proves that YouTube Shorts have become a major force in the global video industry, changing how people consume content both on mobile and at home.
