Nigerian entrepreneur Sim Shagaya will step down as Chief Executive Officer of uLesson Group after eight years, the company has announced.

According to the company, Shagaya will transition into the role of Executive Chairman as part of a leadership restructuring aimed at guiding the next phase of growth for the education technology firm behind uLesson and Miva Open University.

Iheanyi Akwitti, the companyโ€™s Group Chief Academic Officer and Registrar, will become CEO-Designate from June 2026 before officially assuming the position of Group CEO on January 1, 2027.

The transition marks a major shift for one of Nigeriaโ€™s leading edtech companies, which has expanded its digital learning services across Africa over the past few years.

Founded by Shagaya, uLesson gained recognition for using technology to improve access to quality education through online learning platforms, educational content, and virtual teaching support.

The leadership change also comes shortly after Shagaya announced the launch of Myka, a newly founded insurance startup, signaling his growing interest in other sectors beyond education technology.

The company said the transition process is intended to ensure continuity while positioning the organisation for future expansion in Africaโ€™s evolving education sector.

Industry observers say the move reflects a growing trend among African startup founders transitioning into strategic leadership roles while allowing new executives to oversee day-to-day operations.
