Jeremy Awori is a Kenyan banker and corporate leader who serves as the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, headquartered in Lomé, Togo. Appointed in March 2023, he is recognized as one of Africa’s leading banking executives, known for advancing innovation, inclusion, and cross-border financial integration across the continent.

Early life and education

Awori was born in Nairobi to a Kenyan engineer father and a British lawyer mother. He attended St. Mary’s School in Nairobi before studying pharmacy at the University of Manchester, graduating in 1991. Transitioning from healthcare to finance, he later earned an MBA from McGill University, specializing in finance and international business.

Banking career

Awori began his career as a pharmacist in the United Kingdom before joining Standard Chartered Bank Kenya at age 28 as Head of Retail Banking. His leadership took him through senior roles in the UAE, Tanzania, and Kenya, culminating as CEO of Standard Chartered Tanzania (2008). He later became CEO of Barclays Bank Kenya, guiding its rebrand to Absa Bank Kenya in 2020, and retired from Absa in October 2022.

Leadership at Ecobank

As Group CEO of Ecobank since March 2023, Awori has focused on digital transformation, sustainability, and regional financial integration. Under his leadership, Ecobank issued a $400 million oversubscribed Eurobond (2024) and achieved strong profitability, positioning the bank to address Africa’s evolving financial landscape.

Recognition and influence

Awori has received several honors, including listings among Africa’s Top 25 Finance Leaders and 100 Most Influential Leaders in Africa. He is a Fellow of both the Aspen Global Leadership Institute and the African Leadership Initiative. Beyond banking, he advocates gender equality and inclusive growth through his service on boards such as the Kenya Private Sector Alliance and the United Nations Global Compact Network Kenya.
