Google is preparing to pour billions into physical infrastructure for one of its closest AI partners, deepening the entanglement between the search giant and Anthropic.
The company is nearing a deal to help finance a massive new data center campus in Texas that will be leased to Anthropic, according to multiple reports. The project, developed by Nexus Data Centers, carries a price tag exceeding $5 billion and is designed to deliver an initial 500 megawatts of capacity as early as late 2026. Longer-term plans could see the site scale up dramatically to as much as 7.7 gigawatts across roughly 2,800 acres.
Google’s role goes beyond a simple landlord arrangement. The company is expected to provide construction financing and other support, effectively giving Anthropic access to significant new compute resources while expanding Google’s own cloud capacity for AI workloads, particularly its custom TPUs. The structure reflects the intense pressure both companies face to secure reliable, large-scale power and infrastructure amid the AI boom.
For Anthropic, the Texas facility would represent a major expansion of its ability to train and run ever-larger models like Claude. The startup has already secured substantial backing from Amazon and Google Cloud, but dedicated, high-capacity data centers remain a critical bottleneck. A 500 MW site is enormous, enough to power roughly half a million homes, and underscores how quickly AI infrastructure demands are outstripping traditional hyperscale builds.
The move also highlights Google’s evolving strategy in the AI race. While it competes directly with Anthropic on frontier models, Google has maintained a close commercial relationship, providing cloud services and investment. By helping finance dedicated capacity for its partner, Google can indirectly accelerate Anthropic’s progress while bolstering its own position as an AI infrastructure provider.
Texas has emerged as a favored location for such projects thanks to its abundant land, relatively business-friendly regulations, and growing renewable energy capacity, though power availability and grid constraints remain ongoing challenges across the industry. The scale here, starting at 500 MW and with room for multi-gigawatt expansion, signals confidence that demand will continue to surge.
This isn’t the first time Google has taken an active hand in data center development for AI partners, but the size and specificity of the Anthropic-linked project stand out. It comes as the entire sector grapples with skyrocketing energy needs. Training and serving today’s largest models already consumes vast amounts of electricity, and the next generation is expected to push those figures even higher.
