The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) has opened applications for the 2027 edition of its AI Startup Program, a fully funded initiative designed to equip Africaโ€™s next generation of artificial intelligence entrepreneurs with the technical, business, product, and leadership skills needed to build globally competitive startups.

The seven-month program combines intensive training, technical mentorship, and business coaching from global industry experts to help founders develop AI-powered solutions addressing real-world challenges.

Participants selected for the top-performing teams will advance to a four-month incubation phase, where they will refine their products, strengthen go-to-market strategies, and work toward securing market traction.

At the end of the incubation period, startups will have the opportunity to pitch for pre-seed investment of up to $100,000 and gain entry into the MEST portfolio.

Building Africaโ€™s AI Future

The announcement follows the successful launch of the programโ€™s inaugural cohort, which brought together founders from seven African countries developing AI-driven solutions across multiple industries.

According to MEST, the 2027 intake underscores its commitment to ensuring African entrepreneurs play a defining role in the global evolution of artificial intelligence.

Emily Fiagbedzi, Director of the AI Startup Program, said the need to invest in African AI talent has become increasingly urgent.

AI technology is advancing at an extraordinary pace, and meaningful participation in the global AI economy requires more than access to toolsโ€”it requires the ability to build,โ€ Fiagbedzi said.

โ€œThis program is designed to help talented African founders develop solutions to real challenges while positioning them to compete globally. We are excited to support the next generation of African AI founders through training delivered by some of the most knowledgeable experts in the industry from organizations including OpenAI, Perplexity, Google, and Meltwater.
