Instagram has rolled out a new feature called Instants, designed for quick, casual, and unfiltered photo sharing with friends. The feature officially launched on May 13, 2026, and is available both inside the main Instagram app and as a standalone app.

Instants allows users to snap a photo with one tap using the in-app camera and send it instantly to selected friends, particularly Close Friends or mutual followers. The photos disappear after being viewed once or after 24 hours if not opened. Users can add text, but no filters or heavy editing are allowed. This creates a low-pressure way to share everyday moments without the need for perfect, polished posts.

The new feature takes clear inspiration from Snapchat’s disappearing messages and BeReal’s focus on authentic, in-the-moment sharing. Unlike regular Instagram posts or Stories, Instants feel more private and spontaneous. Sent photos are saved in the sender’s private archive for up to one year and can later be turned into a Story recap.

Meta says the goal is to help people connect more naturally with friends instead of competing over curated content. Many young users, especially Gen Z, have been asking for simpler ways to share real life without pressure.

The feature is now rolling out globally. It includes safety measures such as blocking screenshots by recipients, standard Instagram privacy tools, and options to undo a send.

For many Nigerians who use Instagram daily, Instants could offer a fresh way to share moments with family and friends without worrying about likes, comments, or perfect lighting. However, some users feel Instagram is becoming too crowded with new features.

This launch shows Instagram’s continued effort to compete with other platforms by borrowing popular ideas while keeping users inside its ecosystem. Early reactions suggest many are excited to try the more relaxed style of sharing.

The feature is available on both Android and iOS. Users can access it directly from their Direct Message inbox.
