Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI after a court dismissed key parts of the legal challenge linked to the company’s shift toward a commercial business model.

Musk had accused OpenAI and its leadership of moving away from the organisation’s original mission of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. He argued that the company’s partnership structures and commercial direction contradicted the principles under which it was initially founded.

The lawsuit also questioned OpenAI’s relationship with major investors and its transition from a nonprofit-focused structure into a more commercially driven AI company.

However, the court ruled against Musk on major claims in the case, marking a setback in his legal attempt to challenge the company’s operations and leadership decisions.

Musk was one of the early backers of OpenAI before later distancing himself from the organisation. In recent years, tensions between Musk and OpenAI leadership have grown as competition intensified in the artificial intelligence industry.

OpenAI and Altman had defended the company’s structure and argued that its commercial partnerships were necessary to support the enormous costs associated with advanced AI research and development.

The legal battle drew significant attention within the global technology sector because of the growing influence of AI companies and debates around safety, transparency, and corporate control in artificial intelligence development.

The ruling does not end broader discussions surrounding the governance of powerful AI systems, but it represents a significant legal victory for OpenAI and its leadership.
