The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have reaffirmed their commitment to closer collaboration on data governance and digital trust in Nigeria.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi made the pledge during a courtesy visit to NDPC National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Vincent Olatunji at the Commission’s new headquarters in Abuja.
Abdullahi commended the NDPC’s progress since its establishment and highlighted NITDA’s foundational role in developing Nigeria’s data privacy framework. He stressed the need for inter-agency cooperation as the country’s digital economy expands, particularly in protecting citizens’ personal data, strengthening digital trust and supporting sustainable economic growth. He also pledged continued strategic support to keep Nigeria’s data governance standards aligned with global best practices.
Dr. Olatunji expressed appreciation for NITDA’s support, especially during the NDPC’s transition from an internal unit within NITDA into an independent regulatory commission. He noted the evolution of Nigeria’s data protection regime from the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.
The meeting ended with both institutions committing to closer cooperation aimed at promoting a safe, secure and resilient digital environment. The engagement reflects ongoing efforts by Nigerian regulators to coordinate on data protection as digital services, AI adoption and public-sector digitisation expand.
