Somali National University (SNU) is participating in national efforts to advance artificial intelligence capabilities, including collaboration with the government-backed Somalia National AI Center (SNAIC) and involvement in AI summits aimed at fostering research, education, and digital innovation in the country.
SNU, one of Somalia’s leading public universities, has engaged in partnerships and events focused on AI integration in higher education, research, and national development. This includes coordination on the Second AI Summit Somalia 2026, held in June 2026 in Mogadishu, organized by the National Communications Authority (NCA) in collaboration with SNU, Zamzam University of Science and Technology, and other stakeholders.
The summit addressed AI’s role in public services, education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, cybersecurity, and the digital economy. SNU Rector Prof. Dr. Mohamed Mohamud Mohamed contributed to discussions emphasizing AI’s potential for strengthening research and a knowledge-based economy.
Separately, the Somalia National AI Center (SNAIC), a government-affiliated institute established in October 2024 in Mogadishu, leads broader national efforts in AI research, education, and application. SNAIC partners with universities including SNU to develop curricula, training programs, and solutions tailored to local challenges in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and Somali natural language processing.
SNU has also pursued international partnerships, including agreements with Chinese institutions for AI, big data, and biometric technologies to modernize laboratories and curricula.
A 2025 study on generative AI tools at SNU found widespread awareness and use of tools like ChatGPT among students and faculty, with reported benefits for learning and teaching, though it highlighted the need for ethical guidelines and training.
These initiatives form part of Somalia’s push to build digital infrastructure and human capital in AI amid post-conflict reconstruction and economic development goals. No standalone AI centre launch exclusively by SNU was detailed in available announcements; efforts appear integrated into national and collaborative frameworks.
