YouTube has unveiled a new AI-driven feature called “Super Resolution” that automatically enhances the quality of low-resolution videos uploaded to its platform. Starting now, videos uploaded below 1080p will be upscaled to HD quality using artificial intelligence, with the company’s goal to eventually support 4K resolution upscaling. This innovation aims to improve video viewing experiences, especially on larger screens like TVs, where YouTube’s audience continues to grow significantly.

The launch of Super Resolution addresses earlier creator concerns about YouTube applying AI enhancements without prior consent. Creators who previously complained about their videos being altered without permission now have the ability to opt out of this automatic upscaling. YouTube has assured that original video files and resolutions will be preserved intact, and viewers can choose to watch videos in their original resolution or the AI-enhanced version, which will be clearly labeled in the settings.

This AI upscaling is part of a broader push to optimize YouTube for TV viewing. The platform is also rolling out other TV-focused updates, such as increasing thumbnail upload limits from 2MB to 50MB to support 4K-quality images, adding immersive homepage video previews, and incorporating contextual search features that prioritize channel-specific results. YouTube is collaborating with select creators to test larger video file uploads, paving the way for even higher-quality original content.

YouTube’s senior director of product management for TV, Kurt Wilms, highlighted the significance of TV screens as the fastest-growing viewing surface, noting that in the U.S., TV accounts for 36% of total viewing hours, surpassing mobile devices. By introducing Super Resolution along with other TV-centric enhancements, YouTube seeks to elevate content quality while maintaining transparent control for creators, making the platform more engaging for the growing TV audience.

In summary, YouTube’s new AI-driven Super Resolution feature automatically enhances videos below 1080p to HD, with plans for 4K support, while allowing creators full control to opt out. This is part of a strategy focused on improving the viewing experience on TVs through updated video quality, larger thumbnails, immersive previews, and smarter search functionality, underscoring YouTube’s leadership in TV-based content consumption.
