The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (NCAIR), a key arm of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), is stepping up its role as the country’s hub for artificial intelligence, robotics, and emerging technologies. Operating under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, NCAIR is positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s digital transformation.

The update was announced by Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on his LinkedIn profile, highlighting the government’s continued push to harness emerging technologies for national growth.

With a strong focus on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), NCAIR is dedicated to fostering research, innovation, and the responsible adoption of AI-driven solutions. Its goal is clear: to build the skills and tools that will drive Nigeria’s digital economy forward.

NCAIR Expands Research and Capacity Building

At the heart of its mission, NCAIR prioritizes cutting-edge research and development, while building capacity for young innovators, startups, and academia. The centre has rolled out several initiatives, such as the AI Fund in partnership with Google, designed to provide grants to Nigerian AI startups.

Another key program is the AI Research Grants, which target critical sectors like agriculture, health, education, and sustainability. These grants are empowering local researchers to find homegrown solutions to Nigeria’s unique challenges.

Additionally, NCAIR is investing in open-source AI models, releasing tools like NCAIR1/Igbo-ASR, Hausa-ASR, Yoruba-ASR, and NigerianAccentedEnglish ASR. These models are crucial for improving speech recognition across local languages and enhancing digital inclusion.

Driving Technology Transfer and Global Partnerships

Beyond research, NCAIR serves as a bridge for technology transfer and commercialization. By supporting startups and entrepreneurs, the centre ensures that innovations move from labs to markets, creating real-world impact.

International collaboration also stands as a core pillar. The centre is working closely with global players to strengthen Nigeria’s footprint in the digital ecosystem. This ensures that local talent has access to global opportunities while contributing to worldwide innovation.

Core Values and Vision for the Future

NCAIR’s operations are guided by values of innovation, collaboration, inclusiveness, and entrepreneurship. The centre is not only nurturing technical expertise but also promoting the ethical and responsible adoption of AI.

By focusing on policy, governance, and global alignment, NCAIR is setting the stage for Nigeria to emerge as a trusted player in the digital economy. From training developers to releasing large-scale AI models like NCAIR1/N-ATLaS (8B), the centre is laying the foundation for long-term growth.

With its headquarters located in Abuja, NCAIR has become the symbol of Nigeria’s AI-driven ambition. Its blend of research, policy, and commercialization efforts signals that Nigeria is not just catching up, but actively shaping the future of technology in Africa.
