African Mining Week (AMW) 2026 has announced Liberia as a Country Focus destination, shining a spotlight on the West African nation’s rich mineral resources and its ambition to become a more attractive investment destination in the mining sector.

The announcement highlights Liberia’s significant potential in iron ore, gold, and critical minerals as global demand for raw materials continues to rise, particularly for the energy transition. Organisers of AMW, one of Africa’s largest mining investment events, said Liberia’s inclusion reflects growing international interest in the country’s mining sector following recent policy reforms and new discoveries.

Liberia is endowed with some of the highest-grade iron ore deposits in the world, along with substantial gold resources and emerging potential in critical minerals such as lithium, coltan, and nickel. The country has been working to revive its mining industry after years of civil conflict and the impact of the Ebola outbreak.

Recent developments include new exploration licences, improved mining regulations, and efforts by the government to enhance transparency and attract responsible foreign investment. Several major international mining companies have shown renewed interest in Liberian assets, particularly in iron ore redevelopment and greenfield gold projects.

The Country Focus session on Liberia will feature high-level government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, alongside industry leaders and investors. Discussions are expected to cover investment opportunities, regulatory improvements, infrastructure development, and sustainable mining practices.

Organisers noted that Liberia’s strategic location along the Atlantic coast, combined with access to key ports, gives it a competitive advantage for mineral exports to Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

This focus comes at a time when many mining investors are actively seeking new jurisdictions with stable policies and high-grade deposits to diversify their portfolios away from more saturated markets.

The Liberian government has introduced several reforms aimed at making the sector more investor-friendly, including updates to the mining code and efforts to combat illegal mining. Authorities are also emphasising local content, environmental responsibility, and community development as core requirements for new projects.

As global interest in critical minerals intensifies to support electric vehicles, renewable energy, and advanced technologies, Liberia’s untapped resources could play a more prominent role in the coming years.

The African Mining Week Country Focus on Liberia is expected to generate significant attention from mining executives, investors, and financiers attending the event in Cape Town later this year. Success in attracting quality investment could mark an important turning point for Liberia’s mining sector and broader economic development.
