MTN Mobile Money Uganda has appointed Phrase Lubega as its new Managing Director to lead the company’s operations and strategic growth in Uganda’s competitive mobile money sector.
The appointment, effective immediately, strengthens the leadership team of Uganda’s largest mobile money platform as it seeks to expand services, enhance customer experience, and drive deeper financial inclusion across the country.
Experienced Leader at the Helm
Phrase Lubega brings over 15 years of experience in financial services, payments, and telecommunications across Africa. She has held several senior leadership roles within the MTN Group, with a proven track record in scaling digital financial products, building strategic partnerships, and improving operational efficiency.
Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to inject fresh leadership energy while maintaining strong continuity with MTN’s regional expertise.
Key Responsibilities
As Managing Director, Lubega will oversee day-to-day operations, business strategy, regulatory affairs, product innovation, and customer service excellence. Her priorities are expected to include:
- Expanding merchant payments and ecosystem partnerships
- Growing savings, lending, and insurance offerings
- Strengthening security and fraud prevention measures
- Driving digital adoption in both urban and rural communities
MTN Mobile Money Uganda remains the market leader with millions of active users, but faces increasing competition from other mobile money providers and fintech players. The company has been investing heavily in technology upgrades, agent network expansion, and new use cases to maintain its dominant position.
This leadership change comes at a time when Uganda’s mobile money industry continues to record strong transaction growth, supported by increasing smartphone penetration and government efforts to promote a cashless economy.
