Econet InfraCo’s VFEX Listing Unlocks Infrastructure Platform Poised to Power Zimbabwe’s AI Ambitions

Econet InfraCo, the infrastructure spin-off from Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has listed on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX), marking Zimbabwe’s largest capital markets debut at a $1 billion valuation. The move separates passive telecom assets, renewable energy, and real estate into a dedicated, US dollar-denominated platform, providing a stronger foundation for the group’s broader digital and AI expansion.

Econet InfraCo listed by way of introduction on or around March 31, 2026 (ticker: INFR.VX), without raising new capital. Approximately 25% of shares (valued at ~$250 million) were distributed to existing Econet shareholders as a dividend in specie, meeting VFEX free-float requirements. Econet retains a majority ~70% stake.

The entity consolidates:

  • Telecom towers and passive infrastructure.
  • Fibre and related connectivity assets.
  • Renewable energy solutions.
  • Strategic real estate holdings.

This unbundling follows global telecom trends of separating stable, cash-flow-generating infrastructure from customer-facing services to unlock value and attract long-term investors. The listing helped push VFEX’s market capitalization ahead of the older Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE), reflecting confidence in hard-currency, asset-backed plays amid Zimbabwe’s economic context.

While the listing itself focuses on traditional infrastructure, Econet InfraCo’s assets are explicitly positioned to support the group’s aggressive AI push under the wider Econet ecosystem (including Cassava Technologies).

Key developments include:

  • Plans for a major 300-hectare industrial park near Harare’s Robert Mugabe International Airport, featuring a large data centre, up to 100MW solar power, and supporting utilities. This is one of InfraCo’s flagship early projects.
  • Broader group AI initiatives via the newly launched Econet AI unit (April 2026), which includes Cassava AiCloud (Nvidia GPU-powered high-performance computing hosted at the Cassava AI Factory in South Africa) and free access to Google Gemini for customers.

InfraCo’s towers, fibre, power, and planned data centres provide the physical backbone reliable connectivity, energy, and compute facilities essential for scaling AI workloads, network optimization, and sovereign data capabilities in Zimbabwe. Econet has been integrating AI internally for network performance, customer experience, and operations, with the listing enhancing visibility and capital allocation for such infrastructure investments.

The timing aligns with rising demand for digital infrastructure in Africa. AI adoption is accelerating, but requires robust underlying assets that InfraCo is built to deliver predictably (e.g., long-term tenancy agreements with Econet Wireless as anchor tenant, plus potential co-location).

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube and other officials have welcomed the listing as a boost to capital markets maturity and infrastructure development, aligning with national digital and AI strategies.

  • Confirmed: Successful VFEX listing at ~$1bn valuation; asset separation completed; initial projects (data centre + solar + industrial park) announced.
  • Group AI Momentum: Dedicated Econet AI unit, partnerships (e.g., Ericsson for AI-driven networks), and compute access are advancing separately but rely on InfraCo-like infrastructure.
  • Unclear/Forward-Looking: Exact timelines and scale for Zimbabwe-based data centre capacity under InfraCo; full financial performance post-listing; extent of third-party tenant uptake beyond Econet Wireless.

This development strengthens Econet’s ability to support Zimbabwe’s digital economy by ring-fencing infrastructure for long-term investment while the operating business focuses on AI-enabled services. For investors, it offers exposure to stable yields in a high-growth digital infrastructure story; for the country, it signals progress toward localized compute and connectivity capacity amid global AI competition.
