Anthropic has acquired developer tools startup Stainless, a company whose software has been widely used by major tech firms including OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare.

The deal marks a major move in the growing competition among artificial intelligence companies as they race to strengthen their developer ecosystems and infrastructure tools.

Stainless, founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, became known for building tools that automatically generate and maintain software development kits (SDKs). These SDKs help developers interact more easily with APIs across programming languages such as Python, Java, Go, Kotlin, and TypeScript.

The startup’s technology gained popularity among AI companies because it reduced the need for manual SDK maintenance while automatically updating developer tools as APIs changed. Its products were reportedly used by companies including OpenAI, Google, Runway, Replicate, and Cloudflare.

Anthropic did not publicly disclose the financial terms of the acquisition. However, previous reports suggested the company had been in talks to acquire Stainless for more than $300 million.

As part of the acquisition, Anthropic said Stainless will wind down its hosted products, including its SDK generator platform. Existing customers will still retain ownership of SDKs already generated through the service.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Anthropic’s push into AI developer infrastructure, particularly as competition grows around AI agents and tools that connect language models to external software systems.

Anthropic said Stainless had already been powering the company’s official SDKs since the early days of its Claude API platform.

Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend where AI companies are increasingly acquiring infrastructure and developer tool startups instead of relying on third-party providers.
