Opeyemi “Ope” Oyinloye, who has spent over seven years at the company and most recently served as general manager of business operations, will step into the dual role of Group Chief Operating Officer and Acting CEO of Paga Nigeria. The appointment is subject to regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Oviosu will retain his positions as Group CEO and Executive Chairman of the Paga Group Board, while also taking on the role of Non-Executive Chairman of Paga Nigeria. Co-founder Jay Alabraba is shifting to lead Group Special Projects, with an initial emphasis on new market expansion across Africa.

The move comes as Paga marks 17 years since its founding in 2009. What started as a simple mission, to make it easy for people and businesses to move and manage money in a cash-dominated economy, has evolved into a resilient financial services infrastructure that has served millions through multiple economic cycles, regulatory changes, funding winters, and events such as Nigeria’s cash scarcity crisis.

Over the years, we’ve built a company that’s stronger than any one individual, investing in the systems, culture, and leadership depth needed for generational impact

In his post, Oviosu emphasized continuity over disruption. he wrote.

To accelerate our execution for our next phase of growth, we are making our first major leadership changes at Paga Group.

He described the transition as “not a change in direction; it is an acceleration to achieve our massive transformative purpose” of building the premier financial services infrastructure for Africans. “Act 2 of Paga will demand even greater resilience, innovation, and collaboration,” he added. “I am confident that Paga is built to outlast cycles and built to scale beyond borders.”

Oyinloye’s promotion brings internal continuity. Having played a key role in scaling operations, he now assumes responsibility for Paga’s core businesses in Nigeria while the founder turns his attention outward.

Oviosu’s new focus will center on geographic expansion into new African markets and advancing innovation through Paga Labs, the company’s vehicle for emerging technologies. Specific areas of interest include stablecoins, cryptocurrency, and artificial intelligence, frontiers where regulation remains fluid but potential infrastructure plays could extend Paga’s reach.

This leadership evolution reflects a level of institutional maturity that remains relatively uncommon in Africa’s fintech sector, where many companies are still heavily founder-dependent even after a decade or more in operation. Paga has long positioned itself as payments and financial infrastructure rather than a flashy consumer app, building an agent network and rails that have proven durable amid volatility.

By creating space for seasoned internal talent to run the established Nigerian business, Oviosu appears to be freeing bandwidth for the kind of ambitious, cross-border bets that could define the company’s second act. At the same time, the structure preserves his strategic oversight at the group level.

The announcement arrives at a time when Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem continues to mature amid macroeconomic headwinds and evolving Central Bank oversight. Players that survived the early hype cycles are now grappling with questions of sustainable scale, regional ambition, and technological relevance in areas like digital assets and AI-driven services.

Paga did not release additional operational or financial details alongside the leadership update. The core payments business will continue under Oyinloye’s acting leadership in Nigeria, with Oviosu remaining closely involved at the holding company level.

For a company that has already navigated 17 challenging years, today’s changes feel less like a dramatic pivot and more like a deliberate attempt to professionalize for longevity. In an industry where execution across fragmented markets is notoriously difficult, Paga’s bet on deeper leadership benches and focused innovation could prove instructive, not just for the company itself, but for other African fintechs eyeing similar transitions from survival to scaled infrastructure.

The journey, as Oviosu put it, “continues.
