However, in 2023, a fungal disease, <em>Phytophthora zingiberis<\/em>, ravaged ginger farms, wiping out as much as <strong>95% of the total harvest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ripple effect has been devastating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ginger prices skyrocketed from <strong>\u20a650,000 to \u20a6800,000 per bag<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Export volumes dropped by <strong>74%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Farmers suffered losses of over <strong>\u20a612 billion<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many abandoned ginger farming entirely, citing contaminated soil and unaffordable inputs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This isn\u2019t just a ginger story, it\u2019s a case study in national food vulnerability,&#8221; Dele emphasized in his report. &#8220;High input costs, lack of early warning systems, and zero safety nets have left farmers helpless.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Nigeria unable to meet even local demand, importers have turned to <strong>Chinese ginger<\/strong>, which lacks the pungency and oleoresin strength that made Nigerian ginger world-renowned.
