The platform aims to connect small businesses to markets, finance, advisory services, and e-commerce opportunities, with plans to reach over 7,500 MSMEs and expand nationwide.

AI and Public Sector Capacity: Initiatives include ministerial bootcamps on AI, capacity building for responsible AI adoption in government, and projects harnessing AI for health outcomes and climate-sensitive disease surveillance. These efforts align with Ghana’s emerging National AI Strategy.

Innovation and Youth Empowerment: Partnerships with institutions like the University of Ghana focus on establishing University Innovation Pods (UniPods) to drive digital skills training, entrepreneurship, and solution development in key sectors such as agriculture, health, and climate.

Regional and Cybersecurity Governance: A new project with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) strengthens AI and cybersecurity governance across African Union member states, funded by Japan.

These initiatives come as Ghana pursues an ambitious digital agenda to diversify its economy, create jobs, and improve public service delivery. With mobile money already well-established, the focus is shifting toward deeper digitisation of businesses, e-commerce readiness, and governance of emerging technologies like AI.

UNDP’s support emphasises inclusivity, targeting women and youth-led enterprises, informal sector players, and underserved regions. The partnership also addresses risks, including the digital divide, data governance, and cybersecurity.

Niloy Banerjee, UNDP Resident Representative in Ghana, has highlighted the importance of aligning digital efforts with sustainable development goals and national priorities. Stakeholders from government, private sector, and civil society are actively involved in steering committees and implementation

As projects move from strategy to execution, measurable outcomes are expected in MSME productivity, digital skills penetration, and public sector efficiency. The partnership model combining policy support, platform development, capacity building, and innovation hubs could serve as a blueprint for other African nations navigating digital transformation.

With Ghana positioning itself as a regional digital hub, sustained collaboration with UNDP and other partners will be critical to translating infrastructure and policy gains into broad-based economic and social benefits. The coming years will test the ability of these initiatives to deliver tangible impact amid evolving technological and economic realities.

Ghana and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are strengthening their long-standing partnership with a series of initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s digital transformation, enhancing MSME competitiveness, and building institutional capacity for responsible AI adoption.
