The integration makes Shuttlers one of the transport operators whose services are accessible through Google’s transit ecosystem.

According to the company, the partnership required significant upgrades to its route mapping, scheduling systems, and real-time transit data infrastructure to meet Google’s operational standards.

“This partnership reflects what is possible when local innovation meets global platforms,” Shuttlers said in a statement, adding that the integration would help more commuters access reliable and affordable transportation options.

The announcement comes as African cities continue to grapple with transportation challenges, including worsening traffic congestion, limited public transport capacity, and rising commuting costs.

Data cited by the company from the World Bank indicates that transport inefficiencies cost African cities between 2 and 5 percent of gross domestic product annually. In Lagos, commuters can spend more than 30 hours each month in traffic, highlighting the scale of the mobility challenge facing residents of one of Africa’s largest cities.

Google West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, said the collaboration is designed to improve access to transport information and support more efficient urban mobility.

“As more people rely on digital tools to navigate their daily lives, making transit information readily available can help commuters make better transportation decisions,” he said.

Founded in 2016, Shuttlers operates a shared mobility platform that connects commuters to scheduled bus services. The company says it currently serves approximately 30,000 active users, operates more than 430 buses daily, and manages over 1,000 itineraries across Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt.

The firm also reported a 99 percent trip completion rate and a 99.94 percent incident-free operational record.

Beyond expanding its service network, Shuttlers is increasing investment in cleaner transportation technologies. The company has begun deploying compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and electric vehicles as part of efforts to reduce emissions from urban transportation.

According to the company, the alternative-energy vehicles can lower carbon emissions by as much as 60 percent compared to conventional diesel-powered buses.

The latest milestone follows years of investor backing. Shuttlers previously raised $1.6 million in seed funding before securing an additional $4 million investment round led by Verod-Kepple Africa Ventures, with participation from several local and international investors.

Industry analysts say the Google Maps integration represents more than a corporate achievement. It signals the increasing role of digital mobility platforms in addressing transportation challenges across Africa, where rapid urbanisation is placing growing pressure on existing transit infrastructure.

As cities continue to expand and commuters seek more reliable alternatives, the combination of digital mapping, real-time transit information, and shared mobility services is expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of urban transportation on the continent.

Nigerian mobility technology company Shuttlers has surpassed 10 million completed trips and expanded its digital footprint through a new integration with Google Maps Transit, a development expected to improve commuter access to transportation services across major cities.
