It will focus on four pilot countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Namibia, and the Republic of Congo.

Through the project, ECA aims to provide digital literacy and financial management training to more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs while engaging over 200 policymakers and government officials in capacity-building workshops and policy dialogues.

Women in Africa continue to face significant hurdles in the digital space, including limited access to technology, finance, and enabling regulatory environments. The ECA initiative seeks to close these gaps by combining practical skills training with efforts to strengthen policy frameworks that support women-led digital businesses.

The project is implemented through ECA’s Technology, Innovation, Connectivity and Infrastructure Division (TICID) and responds directly to the need for more inclusive digital transformation across the continent.

By equipping women with relevant digital and business skills, the program aims to help them scale their enterprises, create jobs, and contribute more effectively to national and regional economies. It also seeks to influence policy changes that promote gender-responsive digital strategies in the target countries.

This latest effort builds on ECA’s ongoing work to advance digital inclusion and women’s economic empowerment as part of broader continental goals under Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

As digital technologies reshape economies across Africa, initiatives like this are increasingly seen as essential for ensuring women are not left behind in the transition. The coming months will focus on rolling out training programmes and stakeholder engagements, with early results expected to inform potential expansion to more countries.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has launched a new regional project to boost women’s participation in the digital economy, addressing persistent barriers in access to digital skills, finance, and markets.
