The Murang\u2019a County Government has launched a major initiative to equip 170 public health facilities with Starlink satellite internet, aiming to bridge connectivity gaps and modernise healthcare delivery across the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rollout, which began in late May 2026, will provide high-speed, reliable broadband to hospitals, health centres, and dispensaries many of which previously struggled with poor or inconsistent internet access. This marks one of the largest county-level deployments of Starlink for public health infrastructure in Kenya to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Mwangi wa Iria said the upgrade is designed to enable real-time data management, telemedicine consultations, digital record-keeping, and faster coordination between facilities and county health headquarters. Facilities in remote and hilly parts of Murang\u2019a, where traditional fibre or mobile broadband has been unreliable, stand to benefit the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Starlink\u2019s low-latency satellite service, health workers will be able to access national health information systems more efficiently, transmit diagnostic images, conduct virtual specialist referrals, and improve supply chain tracking for medicines and equipment. County officials expect the connectivity boost to reduce delays in emergency responses and support better disease surveillance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative aligns with Kenya\u2019s broader digital health strategy, which emphasises technology as a tool to achieve universal health coverage. Murang\u2019a joins a growing list of counties exploring satellite internet solutions to overcome infrastructure challenges in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has rapidly expanded across Kenya since receiving regulatory approval, particularly appealing to counties and organisations operating outside major urban centres. Its plug-and-play terminals offer quick deployment compared to traditional infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Murang\u2019a, the investment reflects a commitment to leveraging technology for better public service delivery. Improved connectivity is expected to support staff training, real-time reporting, and integration with national platforms such as the Kenya Health Information System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move could also serve as a model for other devolved units facing similar connectivity challenges. As Kenya pushes to digitise more aspects of healthcare, reliable internet has become a foundational requirement rather than a luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

County health officials will now focus on training staff to maximise the new connectivity and integrate digital tools into daily operations. Early feedback from pilot facilities has been positive, with reports of significantly faster system access and smoother telemedicine sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Starlink deployment in Murang\u2019a highlights the growing role of satellite technology in closing Kenya\u2019s urban-rural digital divide, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare.
