The East African Communications Organisation (EACO) and Smart Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fast-tracking digital transformation initiatives across the continent through enhanced collaboration, policy harmonisation, and infrastructure development.

The agreement, signed during a high-level digital economy forum in Kigali, focuses on areas such as broadband connectivity, digital skills development, cybersecurity, and the adoption of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G networks. Smart Africa CEO, Mr. Lacina Koné, described the partnership as a strategic step towards a digitally empowered Africa.

“By working closely with EACO, we can harmonise efforts and create a more cohesive digital ecosystem that benefits all African citizens and economies,” Koné stated. EACO representatives echoed this sentiment, emphasising the need for regional integration in the digital space.

The MoU is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, joint projects, and resource mobilisation to bridge the digital divide and support the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy.

Stakeholders have welcomed the development as a positive move that could unlock significant economic opportunities and improve service delivery in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture.
