Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim, a respected energy expert and former Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), has been announced as a speaker at the African Energy Week (AEW) 2026 Conference and Exhibition.

His participation highlights the growing push for African-led financing and stronger control over the continentโ€™s energy future. Dr. Ibrahim is expected to share insights on closing Africaโ€™s huge energy financing gap and developing better regional energy systems.

Dr. Ibrahim played a key role in the creation of the African Energy Bank (AEB), a financial institution designed to fund oil and gas projects using African capital. The bank was established with an initial $5 billion capitalization and aims to deploy $10 billion in its first phase, with plans to reach $15 billion by 2030. Nigeria officially handed over the bankโ€™s headquarters in Abuja earlier this year.

The former APPO chief has consistently argued that Africa cannot continue exporting raw crude and gas while importing refined petroleum products. With over 125 billion barrels of crude reserves and vast natural gas resources, he believes the continent must build stronger refining capacity, pipelines, and distribution networks to reduce import dependence and create more value locally.

Africa currently faces an annual upstream financing gap estimated between $30 billion and $45 billion. Many projects remain stalled due to lack of funding as traditional foreign investors pull back. Dr. Ibrahim sees the African Energy Bank as a practical solution to this challenge.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, welcomed Dr. Ibrahimโ€™s involvement, saying his experience and leadership will add great value to discussions at the conference.

African Energy Week 2026 is scheduled to hold from October 12 to 16 in Cape Town, South Africa. The event is expected to bring together energy ministers, investors, operators, and policymakers to shape the next chapter of Africaโ€™s energy development.

Dr. Ibrahimโ€™s presence at the conference comes at a time when many African nations are demanding greater ownership and control of their energy resources. His voice is likely to influence conversations around financing sovereignty and practical solutions for the continentโ€™s energy needs.
