OpenAI has teamed up with 1Password to add strong security features to its AI coding agent, Codex. The partnership aims to solve a major concern in AI-assisted software development how to safely give AI agents access to passwords and other sensitive credentials without exposing them to risks.

Under the new collaboration, Codex users can now grant the AI agent secure, just-in-time access to credentials stored in 1Password. This allows the coding agent to work with necessary secrets during development while keeping them outside of prompts, code, and the modelโ€™s context window. The system issues credentials only when needed and limits their use to specific tasks.

1Passwordโ€™s Environments MCP Server for Codex makes this possible. It provides a safer way for developers and companies to use powerful AI coding tools without the usual security worries that come with sharing sensitive information.

The move comes as AI coding agents like Codex become more popular among developers. While these tools can greatly speed up coding and automation, they also create new risks around credential leaks and unauthorised access. The partnership with 1Password is seen as an important step in making agentic AI safer for real-world enterprise use.

OpenAI and 1Password say the integration will help organisations adopt AI coding tools more confidently, especially in industries where security is critical.

This development reflects the growing focus on โ€œagentic securityโ€ protecting AI agents that can act independently. Many companies are now looking for better ways to balance the power of AI with strong safety measures.

For developers and businesses across Africa and the world using Codex, this partnership offers a more secure way to integrate AI into their workflows. More details on how to activate the feature are expected to be released soon.
