The project aims to identify vulnerable border sections, curb cross-border crime, and optimise the deployment of enforcement personnel.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is piloting a border management application that leverages the World Customs Organization’s satellite platform. This tool will support targeted operations through better mapping and intelligence.

Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, described the initiative as a key step in addressing long-standing challenges at the busy trading corridor while boosting revenue.

Labaran Ahmed, head of the NCS Geospatial Unit, noted that the technology will enable more strategic resource allocation. Several ECOWAS countries, including Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo, are implementing similar geospatial solutions, with growing interest from other African nations such as Egypt, Kenya, Mali, and Senegal.

The partnership builds on existing regional cooperation between customs authorities to modernise border management through digital tools. It forms part of broader efforts to balance security with efficient trade flows in West Africa.

No specific implementation timeline or funding details were disclosed.
