Shirley Webber, Managing Principal and Coverage Head for Resources & Energy at Absa Bank, has been appointed to the advisory board of African Mining Week<\/a> (AMW) 2026, a leading mining conference focused on investment, policy, and development across Africa\u2019s extractive sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her appointment is expected to reinforce AMW\u2019s efforts to attract global capital into Africa\u2019s mining industry and support the continent\u2019s position in critical global supply chains. In her advisory role, Webber will contribute to strategic discussions and help shape the 2026 conference agenda, with a focus on mining finance, investment partnerships, and sustainable sector development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Webber brings more than 20 years of experience in corporate and investment banking. Her involvement comes at a time when Africa is seeking to close a significant mining investment gap, with estimates suggesting the continent holds up to $8.5 trillion in untapped mineral resources. Industry projections indicate that annual investment would need to exceed $160 billion by 2050 to support a sustainable and competitive mining sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

African countries continue to position themselves to attract increased investment into their mineral resources. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is estimated to hold approximately $24 trillion in untapped mineral wealth, while South Africa has set out plans to mobilize about R2 trillion in mining investment over the next five years to expand its critical minerals industry. AMW 2026 is expected to bring together investors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to explore financing mechanisms and partnership opportunities across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since joining Absa in 2011, Webber has contributed to the bank\u2019s growing involvement in resources and energy financing across Africa. Under her leadership, Absa has supported a range of mining and energy projects across multiple geographies and commodities, including rare earth elements, copper, platinum group metals, and other energy-related minerals.
