Swiggy has rolled out a new AI-powered voice ordering feature that allows users to place food orders using natural speech in 11 Indian languages. The feature, launched in partnership with Indian AI startup Sarvam AI, marks one of the most significant multilingual voice commerce deployments in the Indian food delivery sector to date.
Users can now simply speak their order in languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, and English. The system is designed to understand regional accents, handle complex order combinations, and process modifications naturally, such as “add extra cheese to my Margherita pizza and make it less spicy.”
The integration leverages Sarvam AI’s voice models, which were specifically trained on diverse Indian speech patterns and dialects. This allows the voice assistant to handle code-mixing (switching between languages mid-sentence), understand context, and respond in a natural, conversational tone. Swiggy says the feature significantly reduces ordering friction, especially for users who prefer speaking over typing or those with limited literacy in English.
Initially rolled out to a limited set of users in major cities, the voice ordering system is expected to expand nationwide in the coming weeks. Swiggy claims early internal tests showed a noticeable improvement in order completion rates and user satisfaction, particularly during peak hours when typing long orders can be cumbersome.
This move comes as Indian food delivery platforms face increasing competition and look for ways to deepen user engagement through more intuitive interfaces. Voice ordering also has strong potential in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where smartphone penetration is high but comfort with English text-based ordering remains relatively lower.
For Sarvam AI, the partnership with Swiggy represents a major validation of its voice technology in a high-volume consumer application. The Bengaluru-based startup has been building large language and speech models tailored specifically for Indian languages and use cases.
Swiggy’s adoption of multilingual voice AI reflects a broader trend in Indian tech: moving beyond English-first interfaces to create truly inclusive digital experiences. As voice technology matures, it could become a key differentiator in sectors like food delivery, e-commerce, and ride-hailing across the country’s linguistically diverse population.
The feature is currently available within the Swiggy app for eligible users and is expected to see rapid iteration based on real-world usage data.
