The newer LINX Mombasa exchange, established in early 2025, has rapidly gained traction as a key hub for coastal and regional connectivity. Together, the two sites are benefiting from Kenya’s fast-growing digital economy, rising data consumption, e-commerce expansion, and increased cloud adoption.

By enabling local peering, LINX’s Kenyan exchanges help keep internet traffic within the country and region, reducing latency, lowering bandwidth costs for network operators, and delivering faster, more reliable internet experiences for users.

The Nairobi exchange operates across multiple high-quality data centres including iXAfrica, Africa Data Centres, PAIX, and iColo. LINX Mombasa is strategically located at iColo’s MBA1 and MBA2 facilities, taking advantage of Mombasa’s position as a major subsea cable landing point. Both operate as independent exchanges, keeping East African traffic local rather than routing it through Europe.

The exchanges have attracted over 50 member networks each, including major ISPs, mobile operators, content providers, and cloud services. Recent partnerships, such as the collaboration with WaveX for reseller services, are making it easier for more networks to connect without physical presence in the data centres.

This growth reflects Kenya’s emergence as East Africa’s digital infrastructure leader. With multiple undersea cables landing on its coast and supportive government policies, the country is becoming an increasingly important data transit and hosting destination. Local internet exchanges like LINX play a vital role in improving efficiency and resilience of the national and regional internet ecosystem.

As Kenya’s digital economy continues expanding at double-digit rates, LINX’s Kenyan operations are well positioned to support further growth in local content delivery, cloud services, and cross-border data flows. The coming months are expected to bring additional membership growth and higher traffic volumes as more global and regional players interconnect at these hubs.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) is experiencing strong momentum in Kenya, with combined traffic across its Nairobi and Mombasa internet exchange points growing up to 20 times since launch.
