Founded by British-Nigerian technologist and designer <strong>Jermaine Craig<\/strong>, Kwanda is relaunching with the same mission, empowering Black communities through collective giving, but now with a sharper focus and a powerful new platform: <strong>Moyo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally launched in 2020, <strong>Kwanda<\/strong> enabled members of the African diaspora to pool small monthly donations and vote on high-impact projects led by local African changemakers. In just three years, it funded <strong>17 infrastructure and development projects across 10 countries<\/strong>, deployed over <strong>\u00a3105,000 ($131,000)<\/strong>, and built a community of <strong>2,300 monthly contributors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cKwanda started as an experiment rooted in trust and transparency,\u201d said founder <strong>Jermaine Craig<\/strong>. \u201cBut after facing the hard truths of burnout, operational gaps, and sustainability, I stepped back to rebuild it with stronger foundations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Moment of Pause, Then Purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>February 2023<\/strong>, Craig announced a pause in Kwanda\u2019s operations to reflect and recharge. He publicly shared his struggles with operational inexperience and personal exhaustion, choosing transparency over silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve struggled to build an operationally sound and sustainable organization out of Kwanda,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI need to rest and take some time to reflect&#8230; but I\u2019m still committed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, <strong>Kwanda 2.0<\/strong> is back with a more resilient approach: a <strong>holding company model<\/strong> housing multiple giving vehicles, starting with its flagship new initiative, <strong>Moyo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Introducing Moyo: Reliable Monthly Income for Those in Need<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Launching in <strong>October 2023<\/strong>, <strong>Moyo<\/strong> is a new giving platform under the Kwanda umbrella that provides <strong>ongoing monthly income<\/strong> to individuals living below the poverty line in <strong>Nigeria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through partnerships with local grassroots organizations, Moyo identifies the most vulnerable and allocates funds based on each recipient\u2019s situation and cost of living. Households with dependents receive higher support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe promise is not just aid\u2014it\u2019s <strong>dignity and stability<\/strong>,\u201d said the Kwanda team. \u201cWe\u2019re offering a steady income for as long as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Key features of Moyo include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>50% of all donations<\/strong> go directly to recipients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The remaining <strong>50% is held in reserves<\/strong>, protecting recipients from the instability of donor drop-offs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The model is built on respect for recipients&#8217; autonomy, letting them decide how best to use the funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\">ALSO READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/villpress.com\/foday-dumbuya-the-story-behind-labrum-london\/\">Foday Dumbuya: The Story Behind LABRUM London<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expanded Vision: Supporting Other Nonprofits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kwanda 2.0 is also designed to <strong>welcome and uplift smaller African nonprofits<\/strong> that share its values. These organizations will have the opportunity to merge with Kwanda and benefit from its tech infrastructure, resources, and donor network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about building our brand\u2014it\u2019s about building an ecosystem,\u201d Craig noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Legacy of Impact and Transparency<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Past Kwanda projects have included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reusable menstrual kit production in Ghana<\/strong>, enabling girls to stay in school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Micro-loans and training in Sierra Leone<\/strong>, helping over 50 entrepreneurs grow small businesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clean water boreholes in Tanzania<\/strong>, delivering sustainable access to safe water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UX\/UI design scholarships in Nigeria and Ghana<\/strong>, equipping underserved youth with digital skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>COVID-19 food relief<\/strong>, which reached 181 homes across West Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Kwanda\u2019s signature values remain unchanged: <strong>radical transparency<\/strong>, <strong>community governance<\/strong>, and <strong>African-led solutions<\/strong>.
