The company stated that its technical teams worked around the clock to restore full services, with most functionalities returning to normal within a short period. MTN apologised for the inconvenience caused to its customers.

Mobile Money has become critical infrastructure in Uganda, handling billions of transactions annually. For many Ugandans, especially in rural areas and the informal sector, MTN MoMo serves as a primary banking channel for daily financial activities. Any significant downtime highlights the heavy reliance on a few dominant digital payment platforms and the vulnerability of essential services to technical glitches.

The incident also underscores the growing importance of service reliability as digital financial services expand rapidly across Africa. While occasional disruptions are not uncommon during system upgrades, they test customer trust and the maturity of the country’s digital payment ecosystem.

For millions of ordinary Ugandans including market vendors, salary earners, students, and small business owners the downtime created immediate challenges. Many were unable to pay for goods, receive remittances, or settle bills, leading to temporary disruptions in daily routines and business activities.

Parents who rely on MoMo to pay school fees, traders expecting payments from customers, and families depending on remittances were among those most affected. In a country where cashless transactions have become the norm for many, even short service interruptions can cause significant inconvenience and anxiety.

MTN Uganda has reassured customers that all transactions during the period will be honoured and that no funds were lost. The company encouraged users to try alternative channels temporarily and assured them that such incidents will be minimised through ongoing infrastructure investments.

This episode serves as a reminder of both the progress and the challenges of digital financial inclusion in Uganda. As reliance on mobile money grows, service providers like MTN face increasing pressure to deliver near-perfect uptime and transparent communication during outages.

MTN Uganda has issued an official explanation for a recent disruption to its Mobile Money (MoMo) services, which affected millions of users across the country, while offering assurances that the issues are being resolved.
