The Dangote Fertiliser expansion is expected to produce millions of tonnes of urea and other fertiliser products annually, helping to lower costs for smallholder farmers and boost crop yields across key agricultural regions.

AFC’s involvement underscores the project’s strategic importance for Africa’s long-term food security. By increasing local production, the initiative is expected to reduce food import dependency, support rural economies, and contribute to greater agricultural self-sufficiency.

The expansion will enhance the existing Dangote Fertiliser complex in Lagos, one of the largest fertiliser plants in the world. Once fully operational at the expanded capacity, the facility is projected to serve both domestic needs in Nigeria and export markets across West, East, and Southern Africa.

The project is also expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, stimulate local industries through backward integration, and support technology transfer in the agricultural inputs sector.

AFC, as Africa’s leading infrastructure-focused development finance institution, has a strong track record of financing transformative projects that deliver both commercial returns and broad developmental impact. Its participation in the Dangote Fertiliser expansion aligns with its mandate to catalyse investments in critical sectors that drive economic resilience and sustainable growth.

This development comes at a time when African governments and development partners are placing increased emphasis on agricultural transformation and food systems resilience. Rising global fertiliser prices in recent years have highlighted the urgent need for local production capacity.

Dangote Group Chairman Aliko Dangote has consistently emphasised the importance of building industrial capacity within Africa to support food production. The AFC-backed expansion represents a major milestone in realising that vision.

The project is expected to advance in phases, with significant additional capacity coming online over the next few years. Industry stakeholders view this as one of the most important investments in Africa’s agricultural future in recent times.

With strong backing from AFC and other strategic partners, the Dangote Fertiliser expansion is poised to play a transformative role in strengthening food security and agricultural productivity across the continent for decades to come.

Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has announced its backing for a major $7 billion expansion of Dangote Fertiliser, one of the continent’s most ambitious projects aimed at transforming Africa’s agricultural productivity and reducing dependence on imported fertilisers.
