Luno has reached a significant milestone, with nearly 50,000 South African customers now using its xStocks product to invest in tokenised U.S. equities and ETFs, demonstrating robust appetite for accessible global investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched in August 2025, xStocks allows users to buy and sell fractional shares of major global companies such as Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, and Microsoft, as well as ETFs like the S&P 500 tracker, directly in South African rand. The product offers 24\/5 trading, instant settlement, and no foreign exchange fees features that remove many traditional barriers for retail investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luno\u2019s tokenised stocks are backed 1:1 by underlying assets held in custody by regulated partners, including Backed Finance. Users can start investing with as little as R20, making high-value international shares accessible to a broader audience. The platform has expanded its offering to over 60 tokenised assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christo de Wit, Luno\u2019s Country Manager for South Africa, noted that the rapid adoption reflects pent-up demand. Nearly 10% of xStocks users made their first transaction on Luno through this product, indicating it is successfully attracting new customers to the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Popular holdings include technology giants and major ETFs, highlighting South African investors\u2019 interest in growth-oriented global assets. The product has expanded to other markets, including Nigeria, but South Africa remains the strongest performer so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This milestone arrives as South Africa\u2019s retail investment landscape evolves. Traditional stockbroking often involves high minimums, complex offshore processes, and currency conversion costs. Tokenised assets on regulated crypto platforms like Luno offer a simpler, more liquid alternative that operates within familiar digital wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The growth also reflects increasing financial sophistication among younger and middle-class South Africans seeking diversification beyond local markets amid economic pressures and rand volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luno\u2019s achievement underscores the potential for tokenisation to bridge gaps in traditional finance across Africa. As the company continues to expand its product range and regulatory footprint, xStocks could play a meaningful role in increasing retail participation in global capital markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With demand clearly established in its first nine months, the coming year will test Luno\u2019s ability to scale the offering responsibly while maintaining strong compliance and customer protection standards.
