Ericsson and VodafoneThree have completed a significant network modernisation programme described as a world-first in scale and integration, upgrading thousands of sites to deliver enhanced 4G and 5G performance across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The achievement forms part of VodafoneThree\u2019s \u00a311 billion investment to build what it calls the UK\u2019s best network following the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK. More than 8,000 sites have now been upgraded, enabling improved coverage and higher speeds for over 21 million customers, with many areas gaining 4G and 5G connectivity for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the eight-year strategic partnership worth approximately SEK 12.5 billion (\u00a31 billion), Ericsson is powering the majority of VodafoneThree\u2019s next-generation network, including the entire 5G Standalone (5G SA) core and Radio Access Network (RAN) across more than 10,000 sites. The deployment introduces new energy-efficient, AI-optimised 5G RAN products and advanced core capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade leverages Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology, allowing seamless sharing of infrastructure while delivering differentiated services. VodafoneThree has set ambitious targets: 99% 5G Standalone population coverage by 2030 and 99.95% by 2034. The front-loaded rollout has already delivered noticeable improvements in speed, capacity, and reliability for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project represents one of Europe\u2019s largest network consolidation initiatives, combining the assets of two major operators into a single, high-performance network. Ericsson\u2019s role includes modernising legacy 4G infrastructure while laying the foundation for advanced 5G use cases, including enterprise and industrial applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The completion of this phase underscores the technical complexity of merging two large networks while maintaining service quality and accelerating 5G deployment. By choosing Ericsson for the core and a substantial portion of the RAN, VodafoneThree has prioritised speed of execution and long-term performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade is expected to deliver up to 10 times greater capacity in some areas and energy savings of up to 30% through modern equipment. It also strengthens the UK\u2019s digital infrastructure at a time when demand for reliable, high-speed mobile connectivity continues to grow rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VodafoneThree and Ericsson described the milestone as a key step toward delivering differentiated 5G experiences across consumer and enterprise segments. As the network build continues, further site upgrades and coverage expansion are planned throughout 2026 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
