Trident Energy<\/a> is deepening its presence in Central Africa after acquiring significant interests in several offshore oilfields in the Republic of Congo, positioning the company to apply a mature asset redevelopment strategy that previously boosted production in Equatorial Guinea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition, completed in 2025, includes operated stakes in the Nkossa and Nsoko II fields as well as minority interests in the Moho-Bilondo and Lianzi projects. The move strengthens Trident Energy\u2019s growing portfolio of mature African upstream assets at a time when many international oil majors are shifting focus toward lower-carbon investments and divesting ageing oilfields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry analysts say the strategy reflects a broader trend in Africa\u2019s energy sector, where independent operators are increasingly taking over late-life assets and extending production through operational efficiency, infrastructure upgrades and targeted drilling campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trident now holds an 85% operated interest in both Nkossa and Nsoko II, two offshore fields that have been producing for decades. Nkossa first came onstream in 1996, while Nsoko II began production in 2006. Combined, the fields currently contain around 30 producing wells, with licenses extending into the late 2030s and 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company plans to increase output through well intervention programs, production stimulation and selective drilling aimed at maximizing recovery from existing infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trident\u2019s expansion into Congo closely follows the operational model it established in Equatorial Guinea after acquiring offshore assets from Hess Corporation in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Ceiba and Okume Complex in Block G, the company pursued a redevelopment strategy focused on lowering operating costs and improving production performance from ageing fields. The projects, which began production in 2000 and 2006 respectively, include nearly 50 producing wells across both assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since assuming operations, Trident has invested in water injection upgrades, power capacity expansion and artificial lift systems to improve well performance. The company also introduced Electrical Submersible Pump technology in Equatorial Guinea for the first time and launched new deepwater drilling activities aimed at stabilizing long-term production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to company figures, those interventions contributed to a 37% increase in production across the assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy experts say the experience gained in Equatorial Guinea could prove valuable in Congo, where mature offshore infrastructure continues to play a central role in national oil output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond operational improvements, Trident Energy has increasingly positioned local workforce development as a core component of its business strategy across African markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Equatorial Guinea, the company expanded technical training programs, leadership development initiatives and workforce localization efforts designed to move national professionals into senior operational and management positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One notable example is Bienvenido Nguema Envo, the current head of GEPetrol, who previously worked at Trident Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s broader sustainability framework includes investment in local supply chains, digital training systems and professional mobility programs intended to build long-term technical expertise within host countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts expect similar initiatives to accompany Trident\u2019s expansion in Congo as the company seeks to strengthen local participation in offshore operations and technical management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the company\u2019s regional approach, NJ Ayuk said Trident\u2019s strategy demonstrates how mature African oil assets can remain commercially viable when paired with operational discipline and investment in local talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congo has gained an operator with experience in extending the value of mature assets while supporting the development of African expertise across the energy sector,\u201d Ayuk said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The expansion comes as Congo and several other African producers continue exploring ways to sustain crude production from existing offshore infrastructure while balancing investment needs, operational costs and local content objectives within an increasingly competitive global energy market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
