In a statement accompanying the partnership, Paga reflected on a personal experience from more than a decade ago in Lagos, where emergency medical treatment for an accident victim was delayed until cash payments could be gathered from multiple ATM withdrawals late at night.

According to the company, the incident underscored a broader systemic issue that continues to affect millions across Africa, where cash dependency, payment delays, and financial friction remain common in both domestic and cross-border transactions.

Nigerians spend significant time each year handling bill payments, while cross-border money transfers across the continent can take several days to complete and often attract high transaction fees. The company also pointed to the impact of currency devaluation on personal savings and household financial stability in several African markets.

Founded 17 years ago, Paga said its long-term mission has been to simplify access to financial services for one billion people by building the underlying infrastructure powering digital transactions rather than focusing solely on consumer-facing applications.

The company disclosed that its platform currently processes approximately $1.5 billion in monthly transaction volume, with cumulative transaction value reaching $42 billion across 653 million transactions. Paga said its services are used for a range of everyday financial activities, including salary payments, school fees, transfers, and rural remittances.

Under the new partnership with Sui, the companies plan to launch four major initiatives aimed at strengthening Africa’s digital financial ecosystem.

The first initiative will introduce high-yield U.S. dollar accounts powered by the Sui Dollar stablecoin, which the companies say is intended to help users protect savings from local currency depreciation.

The partnership also plans to establish on-ramp and off-ramp infrastructure with deeper liquidity across African markets, making it easier for users to move between local currencies and digital assets.

In addition, the companies intend to develop tokenized real-world asset offerings on the Sui blockchain, targeting broader investment accessibility by allowing participation with relatively small amounts of capital.

The fourth component of the collaboration focuses on building cross-border financial rails on Sui’s blockchain infrastructure to support faster and more seamless international transactions for African consumers and businesses.

Paga and the Sui Foundation said the broader objective is to position Africa for long-term economic participation in an increasingly digital global economy.

The companies pointed to demographic projections showing Africa’s population could reach 2.5 billion people by 2050, with the continent expected to account for a significant share of the world’s young population and emerging middle class.

They argued that improving access to modern financial infrastructure will be critical to supporting economic growth, wealth preservation, and global commercial participation across African markets in the coming decades.

The partnership marks another step in the growing intersection between African fintech companies and blockchain-based financial systems as firms across the continent seek solutions to longstanding challenges around payments, currency volatility, and access to global markets.

Paga and the Sui Foundation have announced a strategic partnership focused on expanding digital financial infrastructure across Africa, with plans to develop new blockchain-powered products designed to improve savings, payments, and investment access for millions of users across the continent.
