Asset Value Investors (AVI) has increased its stake in Wacom Corporation to 15.91 percent from 14.83 percent, according to a regulatory filing, reinforcing its influence over the Japanese technology company as it continues to advocate for changes to Wacom’s governance and capital allocation.

The latest filing shows AVI has expanded its ownership by just over one percentage point since its previous disclosure. While the increase does not amount to a takeover bid, it signals the investment firm’s continued confidence in Wacom and its commitment to its long running shareholder engagement campaign.

AVI has been one of Wacom’s most vocal shareholders since building its investment in the company in 2021. Earlier this year, the firm called for the removal of two directors, citing concerns over corporate governance, capital allocation and strategic decision making. It also proposed appointing an independent director and urged Wacom to adopt measures aimed at improving long term shareholder value.

Wacom is best known for its digital pen tablets and pen display technology, products widely used by graphic designers, digital artists, architects and creative professionals. Despite its strong position in the global digital pen market, the company has faced pressure from activist investors who argue that its financial performance and governance have not fully reflected the value of its business.

AVI’s latest share purchase suggests the investment manager remains committed to influencing Wacom’s strategic direction rather than reducing its exposure. In activist investing, increasing a stake often strengthens an investor’s voting power and credibility when engaging with management and other shareholders on corporate reforms.

The filing does not indicate any new proposals or immediate corporate action beyond the increase in ownership. However, investors are likely to monitor future disclosures and company announcements for signs of further engagement between AVI and Wacom’s board.

The development also reflects a broader trend in Japan’s corporate sector, where activist investors have become increasingly active in recent years. Encouraged by governance reforms and greater emphasis on shareholder returns, investment firms have stepped up campaigns aimed at improving capital efficiency, board independence and long term corporate performance across listed companies.

For Wacom, AVI’s larger stake is likely to keep pressure on management as investors look for continued progress on governance, operational performance and shareholder value creation.
