Payaza Becomes Exclusive Payment Partner for Lebara Nigeria’s Commerce Push

Payaza has signed a memorandum of understanding with Lebara Nigeria, becoming the mobile virtual network operator’s exclusive payments and technology partner. The deal, formalised in Lagos over the weekend, positions the Nigerian fintech to power payment experiences across Lebara’s telecom services and a planned lifestyle and commerce platform.

Lebara, operating as a Tier 5 MVNO in Nigeria, is expanding beyond basic connectivity. Its upcoming platform is intended to let subscribers book flights, buy event tickets, pay for digital services and access everyday products from a single interface, rather than limiting interactions to airtime and data purchases. Payaza will supply the underlying payment infrastructure for those transactions.

Philips Akinyele, CTO of Payaza, represented the company at the signing. In a LinkedIn post he described the partnership as another step in building the financial infrastructure that powers Africa’s digital economy, noting that Payaza will provide secure, scalable and reliable payment rails to support seamless customer experiences as Lebara grows its Nigerian footprint.

Fawaz Abaniwonda, Executive Advisor for Innovation & Research at Payaza, framed the agreement as validation of the company’s infrastructure. “Lebara’s decision to select Payaza as it begins operations in Nigeria is a significant vote of confidence in our infrastructure, our people and our ability to support global brands—not only in Nigeria, but across the 19 African markets in which we operate,” he said.

Nigeria’s MVNO market remains early-stage. The Nigerian Communications Commission introduced a five-tier licensing framework in 2023 and has issued dozens of licences, yet only a limited number of operators have launched full commercial services. Lebara is among those seeking differentiation through value-added digital services rather than pure connectivity.

Yinka Isioye, Lebara Nigeria’s Director of Consumer Business, said the partnership reflects a shared view that connectivity and finance should work together. “We’re more positioned to not just deliver connectivity, but layer these kinds of services on it because, again, as an MVNO, that has always been the MVNO way,” he noted. Success metrics, he added, will centre on customer experience rather than transaction volume alone.

For Payaza, the arrangement extends its role as payment infrastructure for telecom and lifestyle platforms. The company’s multi-country presence is positioned as an advantage for partners looking to expand across African markets without rebuilding payment systems from scratch.

The collaboration fits a wider pattern in African telecoms, where operators increasingly layer commerce, content and financial services onto core connectivity to deepen engagement and diversify revenue. Whether Lebara’s commerce hub gains traction will depend on execution, device reach and the reliability of the payment layer Payaza provides. For now, the MoU gives both sides a concrete platform to test that model in Nigeria’s competitive and youthful digital market.
